Giovanni Santangelo, Ph.D. (La Jolla)
(He/Him/His) Psychological Associate supervised by Dr. Karen Hyland
Welcome! I’m Dr. Giovanni Santangelo, a postdoctoral therapist in La Jolla (Psychological Associate PSB94028405, supervised by Dr. Karen Z. Hyland, PSY17839) with Hillcrest Psychological Associates. I offer a safe, affirming space as a therapist in San Diego where you can explore your thoughts and experiences openly and without judgment. My goal is to meet you with authenticity, compassion, and unconditional positive regard, so that you can show up exactly as you are.
I value and celebrate the richness of every individual’s personal and cultural background. I proudly stand as an ally to the LGBTQIA2S+ community and advocate for those who belong to marginalized or underserved populations. Whether you’re navigating life transitions, identity exploration, or seeking a deeper sense of meaning, you’re not alone.
I work with adults of all ages and am a therapist in San Diego, supporting concerns such as:
– Depression and Grief
– Stress and Anxiety
– Addictions and compulsive behaviors
– Relationship challenges
– Career Counseling
– Neurodivergence and identity development
– Acculturation and bicultural stress
– Existential concerns and purpose-seeking
My Therapeutic Approach
I blend Existential and Humanistic frameworks with evidence-based cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT) strategies. This means we’ll work together to uncover patterns that may be holding you back, explore difficult emotions, and build insight into how you relate to yourself and the world around you.
Our work is collaborative. We’ll explore your internal landscape, uncover what’s meaningful to you, and move toward a more grounded, intentional way of being. Growth isn’t always easy, but you don’t have to do it alone.
Education & Training
I earned my B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Merced. After working with unhoused populations as a case manager, I pursued an M.A. in Organizational Behavior Psychology and later a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology- Fresno Campus. My doctoral research focused on the intersection of cultural perspective and religious practice. I completed my APA-accredited internship at the University of Idaho (yes, the snow was very real for a California native!).
