Christina Barnes-Matthews, PsyD

(She/Her/Hers) Psychological Associate Supervised by Dr. Shannon Franklin PSY29421

Hello and welcome! I’m Dr. Christina Barnes-Matthews, a post-doctoral therapist in San Diego at Hillcrest Psychological Associates (Psychological Associate, PSB94027747, supervised by Shannon Franklin, Psy.D. CA Licensed Psychologist PSY29421).

I specialize in working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, and trauma. I also work with those who may be unsure about their symptoms but overall want to “feel like themselves again.” My ultimate goal for your mental health wellness journey is to help you gain the tools and the skills to get back to what matters to you most!

As a therapist, I use a person-centered modality to put the client first and cater the treatment to what the client wants and needs using evidenced-based practices (EBP). The main EBP I use with clients is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) lens. This means I work with you to understand how your thoughts influence your behaviors and feelings and how this can impact your day-to-day life. I also incorporate Mindfulness and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) aspects as fit based on my training and client needs. I view therapy as a journey with the client to help them change maladaptive patterns that prevent them from living a life that brings joy.

Prior to my time at Hillcrest Psychological Associates, I have gained experience working with clients in diverse settings, including an inpatient hospital, outpatient clinics, and community mental health centers. I am passionate about working with underserved populations, including those who identify as Black/African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQIA+.

It can be difficult to find a therapist that fits your needs and feels right for you. After reading, I hope that I can be of service and guide you on your mental health wellness journey. Thank you for considering me to be your future therapist. If this feels right, book an appointment today!

I am an in-network therapist for Cigna, Aetna and Anthem Blue Cross in San Diego.
